It’s No Surprise That Samsung phones are outselling iPhones worldwide

Apple needs to convince the world that the iPhone is still innovative.

The latest charts from analysts at IDC show Samsung has reclaimed the top spot on the global smartphone charts for the first quarter of the year, knocking Apple down to number two. Apple was dominating the charts for a brief second. During the first quarter, Samsung shipped 20.8% of the world’s smartphones while Apple shipped 17.3%.

Apple’s sales have declined by almost ten percent since the start of this year. It is possible that the reason for this could be the struggling economy and the decreasing sales of iPhones in China. It’s possible that the iPhone may not be as exciting as AI-first Android devices and folding smartphones. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lack the features that are popular among smartphone users worldwide despite providing the premium Apple experience.

I find that point fascinating. True, based on IDC data for the first quarter of 2024, Samsung dominated global smartphone shipments.

There could be several reasons why this is happening:

Wider variety of phones: Samsung offers a wider range of phones at different price points, whereas Apple focuses on the premium market.
Android vs iOS: The Android operating system used by Samsung phones is open-source and used by many manufacturers, giving it a larger market share than Apple’s iOS.
Emerging markets: Growth in smartphone usage in developing countries might favor more affordable options.
However, it’s important to note that this is just a snapshot in time. Apple was the leader for all of 2023, and the market can be very dynamic.

This year’s Galaxy S24 series launch featured exclusive Google perks for early buyers. If you trade in your old Samsung phone you can get a new phone and immediate access to Circle to Search. Other devices have also received the Galaxy AI updates but the early exclusivity helped enhance the brand’s reputation.

There’s also the fact that the rest of the world isn’t binary like the North American smartphone market. There aren’t just two dominating players but a whole spectrum of offerings that seem like a better deal than Apple’s closed devices. The IDC list shows Xiaomi, a brand that isn’t even sold in the U.S., holding steady in the number three spot, followed by Transsion, which manufactures Tecno devices.

Oppo, the company responsible for creating OnePlus smartphones and smartwatches, remains in the top five. I wonder if OnePlus’s recent successes have helped Oppo maintain its top spot. Oppo was one of the first international phone manufacturers to adopt the folding design feature.

Rumors suggest that the iPhone may be more competitive against the Android platform later this year. Leaks indicate that the iPhone 16 will feature AI technology and design elements similar to Samsung. Apple’s more lenient repair policy could create a secondary market to rival budget Androids.
